Introduction
Welcome to your first screenplay assignment! This exercise is designed to help you apply proper screenplay formatting while telling an engaging story. We'll focus on creating a simple yet complete narrative that demonstrates your understanding of basic script structure and storytelling elements.
Assignment Details
Objective
Write a short screenplay (2-3 pages) that tells a complete story, incorporating one of three given props.
Key Elements of Story
- Want: What does your main character desire?
- Obstacle: What's standing in their way?
- Action: What does your character do to overcome the obstacle?
- Response: How does the world respond to their actions?
- Outcome: Where does your character end up?
The Prop Challenge
Include one of the following props in your story:
- A mysterious key
- A broken watch
- A lucky coin
Formatting Requirements
Use the formatting elements we've covered in class and in the textbook. Pay close attention to:
- Proper scene headings (slug lines)
- Action lines in present tense
- Character names in ALL CAPS when first introduced
- Dialogue formatting
- Correct margins and spacing
- Appropriate use of white space
- Properly formatted title page
Submission Guidelines
- Length: 2-3 pages of script, plus a properly formatted title page
- Format: Adhere to basic screenplay format as taught in class
- File Type: Submit as a PDF file
- Submission Method: Upload your PDF to me on Discord
- Due Date: Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at midnight (Saskatchewan time)
Grading Criteria (10% of final grade)
We're looking for:
- Story Structure and Completeness (30%)
- Clear story structure following the WOARO elements
- Engaging characters and dialogue
- Creative use of the chosen prop
- A clear sense of outcome for the protagonist
- Formatting and White Space (20%)
- Correct application of taught formatting elements
- Appropriate use of white space for readability
- Spelling, Grammar, and Punctuation (20%)
- Error-free writing
- Proper use of punctuation in both action lines and dialogue
- Descriptions and Character Introductions (20%)
- Vivid, concise action descriptions
- Clear and impactful character introductions
- Page Count (10%)
- Meeting the required 2-3 pages, plus title page
Remember, while proper formatting and technical writing skills are crucial, the primary goal is to tell an interesting and complete story. Focus on applying what you've learned about both storytelling and screenplay structure.
Important Notes
- If you're unsure about a specific formatting element, stick to what we've covered in class or what's explicitly stated in the textbook. It's better to use simpler, correct formatting than to attempt complex elements we haven't studied yet.
- Ensure your PDF is properly formatted before submission. Issues arising from file conversion are your responsibility.
- Late submissions or incorrect file formats may result in grade penalties.
