The Creative Partnership in The Bear
May contain minor spoilers.
If you've read my last two newsletters, you know I'm a fan of The Bear Season 2. There are many reasons, but I'm recently loving the partnership of Carmy and Sydney.
Yes, it needs some fixing, but when it does indeed work, you can see why they work well together. They riff off each other's ideas and aren't afraid to test them together. Sure, it doesn't always work out, but they never blame each other but try to figure out what's wrong.
The other big thing is that they recognize each other's strengths and know it makes them a better team. We all bring different things to the table, and it's important not to think it makes you better or the other person weaker. Instead, if you recognize how they fill your gaps, you're better for it.
Of course, the big themes between them this season are trust (Can you trust the person you're working with? Are they going to be there for you?) and focus (Can you give your focus to the partnership and the work?).
As this season proves, it's easy to say you trust someone and give your focus, but until you show it in action, you still have work to do.
This whole post also responds to the people who want Carmy and Sydney to be a couple. I'm afraid I have to disagree with it wholeheartedly.
It's refreshing to see a creative partnership on the screen that doesn't attempt to force them into a romantic relationship, and I hope they never take it in that direction.
The true challenge for Carmy and Sydney's relationship isn't whether they will get together but whether they can focus and trust each other to make the restaurant successful. I only hope they can do it and still have a healthy outlook on life.
